World Malaria Day 2021: What to Eat and What Not to Eat

Learn about proper nutrition, what foods to avoid, and how to boost your immunity.

The 25th of April is World Malaria Day around the world. In May 2007, the World Health Organization established World Malaria Day as part of a global campaign to raise malaria awareness. Malaria has been a major concern for over 10,000 years, and according to estimates, about 20,00,000 people die from it each year.

To combat this deadly disease, which is also preventable, ‘education and awareness of malaria’ are critical. WMD’s theme for 2019 was “zero malaria begins with me.” Today, we’ll look at one of the most important aspects of preventing malaria: food. Learn about proper nutrition, what foods to avoid, and how to boost your immunity:

A. Foods to consume:

  1. Papaya leaf extract and raw papaya: Both of these papaya ingredients have antimalarial properties and help in platelet count increase.
  2. Fruits: Fructose is important in the treatment of malaria. Fruits have instant energy. Vitamin C-rich foods include ripe papaya, sweet lime, grapes, tomatoes, lemon, orange, kiwi, melon, and pineapple. Vitamin C helps the body detoxify and combat disease.
  3. Fluids: For malaria treatment, green coconut water, sugarcane juice, pear-pomegranate juice, musk melon-papaya juice, sugar-salt-lemon water, electoral water, ‘sherbat,’ glucose water are necessary.
  1. Soups and vegetables: Include carrot and bell pepper soup, broccoli broth, and basil soup in your diet, as well as plenty of antioxidant-rich vegetables like cabbage, okra, bottle gourd, beetroot, and beans.
  2. Pulses: Masoor dal porridge, moong dal porridge, palak porridge, urad dal porridge, chickpeas are all excellent sources of protein.
  3. Omega-3 fatty acids: Flax seeds, walnuts, chia seeds, and almonds are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which help to minimise inflammation in the body.

B. Stay away from the following diet:

  1. Avoid high-fiber foods such as whole grain cereals, green leafy vegetables, and fruits with thick skin.
  2. Spicy and processed foods: Spicy foods that are packaged, sticky, or junk (chips, pastries, cornflakes, pasta, instant noodles, canned foods, pickles) should be avoided at all costs. They mess with your metabolism, weaken your immune system, and make you more susceptible to diseases.
  3. Caffeine: If you have malaria, avoid drinking cola, soft drinks, chocolate, or cocoa.

Keep safe by remembering to eat and avoid the foods mentioned above when you have malaria.
